Lightweight Hard Maple and Jatoba Tibetan Support Spindle

The 1 3/4 inch whorl of this Tibetan style support spindle was crafted from hard maple. The 10 1/2 inch shaft and tip is jatoba. The weight of this beautiful spindle is 0.9 oz. (26 grams). Dave has adorned the whorl with a pyrographed oak leaf motif.

When constructing his spindles, Dave mounts the spindle whorl blank on the shaft, and then turns and shapes the whorl and shaft together to achieve a well balanced spindle. In addition, he further spin balances each spindle by embedding a counterweight, when needed, in the whorl.
